Jerilynn Booher DVM was born and raised in Hawaii on a sugar plantation in a small rural town. A childhood love of all animals led her to pursue an interest in the biological sciences in college. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Sciences from the University of Hawaii in 1975 and was halfway through study of a Master's degree when she was accepted into the veterinary medicine program at Washington State University. She graduated cum laude with her DVM degree in 1980, and spent the next two years in postdoctoral study at Washington State University dealing with infectious diseases. The next sixteen years were spent in small animal private practice initially as an employee then as a business owner. The transition to alpaca medicine started in 1992 when Timberland Alpacas was created. Since 1996, alpacas have been a full time enterprise. Jerilynn has served on the AOBA Health and Research Committee, the Alpaca Research Foundation, the AOBA/ALSA Show Committee and on the AOBA Show Committee for five years. She currently serves as co-chair on the AOBA Show Rules Committee. She went through and passed the Judges' Training course in 1998 and qualified as an apprentice halter judge and has judged alpaca shows in Canada. In addition to owning Timberland Alpacas Veterinary Services with her husband, Tom, she oversees the breeding program and daily care of the approximately 100 alpacas at Timberland Alpacas.
Thomas Booher was raised in South Florida and after high school graduation, attended Tulane University as a premed student. He graduated in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Botany and following graduation, became a U.S. Naval Officer, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam. Upon discharge from the Navy, Thomas returned to school and began pursuing a Master's degree in bovine nutrition until he entered the School of Veterinary Medicine at Auburn University. After receiving his DVM degree in 1974, he owned and operated two small animal practices until 1996 when the transition was made to an exclusively alpaca practice. Thomas was also an instructor for the veterinary technician program at the local community college while in small animal practice. As an alpaca practitioner, he has served on the AOBA Board of Directors and was AOBA's representative to the executive committee of the U.S. Animal Health Association.
