What breeder in the alpaca industry of the United States, Canada and Australia has not heard of or is not familiar with Don Julio Barreda's famous Accoyo herd? Unparalleled excitement in our country's fledgling alpaca industry was experienced in 1994 when the first Accoyos were imported into the United States from Peru. No existing alpaca in the United States at the time could match the density, character of fleece, and crimp of the Accoyos. Who at the time could imagine any alpaca with a twelve month shear weight of over 14 ½ pounds? For Timberland Alpacas, it has been a very rewarding endeavor to incorporate this bloodline into our herd, and to see the fruits of our labor hit the ground. Timberland Alpacas has maintained and propagated a select group of pure Accoyo bloodline alpacas that is available on a limited basis. The Accoyo bloodline of Timberland Alpacas has been very successful in competing in major shows across the country, winning in fleece and halter competitions. Offspring and grandoffspring of Timberland Alpacas Accoyo bloodline have also experienced major successes for other ranches in the United States and Canada, winning in the show ring, in fleece competitions, and in greatly improving the quality of their bloodstock. One of the goals of the Timberland Alpacas breeding program for the future is to continue to improve and refine what Don Julio Barreda began over 50 years ago.
Timberland Alpacas was the first ranch in the United States to develop the Hemiaccoyo™ bloodline way back in 1994 with the first breeding of their 1994 Accoyo import female Pperuvian Sara to Hemingway. The result of this breeding, Sara's Sahara was so amazing that Timberland Alpacas coined this new bloodline "Hemiaccoyo™" and registered and protected the name through the Alpaca Registry.
The Hemiaccoyo™ bloodline of Timberland Alpacas encompasses the best of two worlds - the pedigrees of Peruvian Hemingway and the Accoyo bloodlines. It may appear somewhat strange at first glance, to name a bloodline after a single herd sire…but such has been the impact of Hemingway. In addition, the impact of the Accoyo bloodlines to North America is well established. What is a "Hemiaccoyo™"? Timberland Alpacas classifies an alpaca as a Hemiaccoyo if a minimum of 75% of the bloodline is derived from a combination of Accoyo and Hemingway. What are the characteristics of the Hemiaccoyos? Fineness of fleece, wonderful crimp, luster, colors ranging from white, fawn, brown to black, and an ability to hold those characteristics of fleece throughout their productive lives. The Hemiaccoyo™ bloodline plays a major role in the breeding program of Timberland Alpacas. The Hemiaccoyos™ have been extremely successful in the show ring, and because the numbers of available Hemiaccoyo™ offspring remain small and limited, the demand for them is very strong. You may see numerous other monikers that mimic the Hemiaccoyo™ name, but Timberland Alpacas is the originator of the true HEMIACCOYO™. As the saying goes, "Imitation is the best form of flattery"!
